Gerard van Honthorst — Christ before the High Priest (about 1617)
Painted around 1617 by the Dutch artist Gerard van Honthorst during his years in Rome, where his mastery of nocturnal candlelit scenes earned him the nickname Gherardo delle Notti, Gerard of the Nights. The whole composition is built around a single candle flame, which lights the faces of Christ and his interrogator and leaves the rest in deep shadow.
