Gerard van Honthorst — King David Playing the Harp (1622)
Painted in Utrecht in 1622, not long after Honthorst returned from nearly a decade in Rome, where he had absorbed Caravaggio's method of building a scene almost entirely from a single source of light against total darkness. David's face, upturned and lit from below, floats out of a background so dark it barely registers as a room. The subject comes from the Old Testament, where the young David was brought before King Saul to play the harp and calm the older king's torment, which makes the almost pained expression read less as praise and more as a man absorbed completely in the act of playing.
