Marie Denise Villers — Marie Joséphine Charlotte du Val d'Ognes (1801)

Painted in Paris in 1801 by Marie Denise Villers, a pupil of Girodet who exhibited at the Salon the year newly opened submission rules first let women show under their own names. For over a century the work hung as a celebrated Jacques-Louis David; only in 1996 did art historian Margaret Oppenheimer identify Villers as its true author. Held today by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and released into the public domain.

Set onto the wallet from the museum's own open-access file, the seated figure carried across the face, her steady gaze held at wallet scale.
