Leonardo’s portrait of a Florentine merchant’s wife, painted around 1503 and never delivered to the man who commissioned it. He carried it with him for the rest of his life. Five hundred years of varnish have turned the whole thing amber, the panel is a web of fine cracks, and the landscape behind her doesn’t quite line up on either side of her head.
