Jacques-Louis David — Napoleon Crossing the Alps (1801)
Painted in 1801 by Jacques-Louis David, and commissioned not by Napoleon but by King Charles IV of Spain, who was assembling a hall of military portraits. Napoleon refused to sit for it, asking only to be shown calm astride a spirited horse. What David delivered was pure theatre, a rearing charger and a wind-whipped cloak; the real crossing of the Great St. Bernard Pass was made on a sure-footed mule led by a local guide.
