Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret — The Last Supper (1896)
Shown at the Salon du Champ-de-Mars in 1896 after years of preparation, including research trips undertaken to get the physical details of the setting right. A leading figure of the French Naturalist school, Dagnan-Bouveret was among the first painters of his generation to use photography as a working tool, staging models to study gesture before touching the canvas. Christ sits at the centre, lit from a source that never appears within the frame, the apostles registering the coming betrayal in their faces rather than through symbolic gesture.
