Raphael — The School of Athens (1509–1511)
A fresco painted directly onto a wall of the Stanza della Segnatura, a room in the Vatican's Apostolic Palace that once served as the study of Pope Julius II. Nearly every figure is an ancient Greek philosopher, Plato and Aristotle at the centre. The brooding figure seated on the steps was a late addition modelled on Michelangelo, and Raphael placed himself on the far right in a dark beret, the one figure looking out at the viewer rather than at the debate.
