Christ Pantocrator — Saint Catherine's Monastery, Sinai
The oldest surviving icon of Christ Pantocrator, painted in encaustic on a wooden panel in the sixth century and kept ever since at Saint Catherine's Monastery in the Sinai desert. Christ raises his right hand in blessing and holds a jewelled gospel book. The two halves of the face are painted differently, one serene and one severe, long read as the dual nature of Christ.
