Held by the Mauritshuis in The Hague since 1902, which classifies it not as a portrait but as a tronie, a study of a type rather than a documented sitter. The earring is an illusion built from two brushstrokes and a single dab of white, with no hook connecting it to her ear. A recent technical study by the museum found the flat black background was originally a deep green curtain that has faded with time.
